Enhancing driving pleasure and so much more besides: BMW EfficientDynamics represents a suite of intelligent technologies that noticeably reduce fuel consumption and emissions while simultaneously boosting the performance of the BMW 1 Series Convertible.

The BMW 1 Series Convertible has a large number of innovative technologies and intelligent solutions that are specially developed to increase efficiency. The Auto Start Stop function, for example, avoids unnecessary engine idling and saves fuel at every red light, and, thanks to Brake Energy Regeneration, the battery is recharged during braking or coasting with the energy that had previously accelerated the vehicle.

Highly developed engines, refined aerodynamics and the innovative lightweight construction of the BMW 1 Series Convertible also facilitate optimum energy exploitation. The sum of all these measures is BMW EfficientDynamics. The result is less fuel consumption, more driving pleasure.


Efficient engines.
Mature but not at the end of the development cycle: the combustion engine still holds considerable potential. With every new generation of engines the BMW engineers set new benchmarks to increase dynamics and efficiency. And this is also true of the petrol and diesel engines in the BMW 1 Series Convertible.

The perfect combination of power and efficiency. The BMW TwinPower Turbo straight six-cylinder in the BMW 135i combines a TwinScroll turbocharger with Valvetronic and direct petrol injection. The result is 225 kW (306 hp), 400 powerful Newton metres and fuel consumption of only 8.6 l/100 km. In contrast, the 125i impresses with a top speed of 238 km/h at 160 kW (218 hp) and an acceleration of 6.8 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h.

Especially efficient in operation are the straight four-cylinder engines of the BMW 120i and 118i. High Precision Injection, the direct petrol injection system, and the valve control with twin Vanos enable an impressively low average fuel consumption. The BMW 120i gets by 6.8 and the BMW 118i on as little as 6.5 l/km.

Diesel engines in the BMW 1 Series Convertible also combine high cost-effectiveness with excellent performance. The 123d four-cylinder diesel engine with variable twin turbo and third-generation common-rail injection system impresses with its spontaneous response, 150 kW (204 hp) of output and a powerful torque. And all this at a fuel consumption level of just 5.3 l/100 km. Even more economical are the engines in the BMW 118d and 120d with outstanding consumption figures of only 4.8 and 5.0 l/100 km.


Aerodynamics.
With the airstream on your side. The innovative design of the BMW 1 Series Convertible consistently adheres to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy and selectively channels the airstream in order to reduce drag and hence fuel consumption.

The aerodynamically optimised front apron of the BMW 1 Series Convertible embodies the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy as a visible design feature. The integrated Aero wheel housing guides the airstream along the front wheel housings via two vertical inlets. Thus accelerated, the stream of air then forms a “curtain” around the outer sides of the wheels. This reduces turbulence as well as drag and fuel consumption. At the same time, the fresh air provides optimum cooling for the engine and additional components such as radiator and intercooler.

If required, the optionally available 17-inch Streamline 370 light-alloy wheels additionally reduce eddy formation directly on the rims, further improving the aerodynamics of the BMW 1 Series Convertible. The result is increased driving stability, a more agile driving performance and less fuel consumption.

Brake Energy Regeneration.
Until now, braking meant losing energy. Brake Energy Regeneration puts an end to this by winning energy back during braking to charge the battery.

As soon as you take your foot off the accelerator or brake in the BMW 1 Series Convertible, the generator is engaged and converts excess kinetic energy into electrical energy which is saved in the battery. Once the battery is fully charged, the generator is disengaged from the engine. This unburdens the engine and reduces emissions. Fuel consumption savings means that there is more power available for acceleration.


Exterior Design : Exterior design.
The sunlight reflects on the long bonnet until the sun’s last rays have disappeared in the distinctive shapes of the powerful vehicle body. The harmonious styling of a convertible animated with athletic dynamism: the exterior design of the BMW 1 Series Convertible.

Safety : Dynamic Stability Control.

The integrated traction modus (DTC) inspires drivers with sporting ambitions by optimising forward thrust and providing even more driving pleasure.

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) optimises both driving stability and traction when setting off and accelerating. Adaptive Headlights.
Adaptive Headlights in the BMW 1 Series Coupé allow you to see bends in a new light. Sensor-controlled xenon headlights coupled to the driver’s steering movement follow the angle of the bend when the wheel turns and provide optimum illumination for the road and kerb.

Information on speed and steering is constantly recorded during the journey and transferred to the electromechanical control unit for the xenon headlights, where it is automatically converted into the corresponding movement. Your headlights thus follow the course of the road and ideally illuminate every bend.

During slow manoeuvres, the additional cornering light is activated and brings light into the dark when parking and turning. At speeds below 40 km/h, if you activate the indicator lever or turn the steering wheel, it automatically lights up an area of up to 80° to the side of the direction of travel. Seven-speed sports automatic transmission.
Seven gears, two clutches and uninterrupted acceleration. The seven-speed sports automatic transmission of the BMW 1 Series Coupé powers you forward without interruption. Two clutches switch between the two drive trains in milliseconds, without the slightest jolt and without interrupting the traction.

Power alone does not determines the dynamic experience of driving – the available force also has to be applied effectively to the road. The optional seven-speed sports automatic transmission for the BMW 135i does not waste a single millisecond of power. Even and uneven gears are distributed on two power trains, each with its own clutch. When one gear is disengaged, the next is already engaged. This minimises shift times but maximises precision. No jolting, no interruption in traction.

Dynamic Stability Control.
The chassis control systems of the BMW 1 Series Coupé fitted as standard make it easy to control the vehicle even under adverse conditions and actively increase your driving safety. The integrated traction modus (DTC) inspires drivers with sporting ambitions by optimising forward thrust and providing even more driving pleasure.

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) optimises both driving stability and traction when setting off and accelerating. In the event of understeering or oversteering, torque is reduced and brakes are applied individually to the wheels. Straight six-cylinder petrol engines in the BMW 125i and 135i.
For decades BMW straight six-cylinder engines have been inspiring international juries and ambitious drivers all over the world. How is it possible to improve such a highly developed engine? With a Twin Scroll turbocharger, Valvetronic and direct petrol injection for a start.
Each of the three technologies is impressive. The outstanding feature is how they compliment one another. In the BMW TwinPower Turbo straight six-cylinder of the BMW 135i they are combined to form one complete package. The result is 225 kW (306 hp), 400 powerful Newton metres across a wide speed range. And all that with a fuel consumption of only 8.5 l/100 km and spectacularly smooth running characteristics.
Impressive smoothness and top performance are also what characterise the straight six-cylinder engines in the BMW 125i. The use of lightweight components makes it possible to achieve a unique combination of maximum performance capacity and remarkable economy.
Thus equipped, the BMW 125i puts in a convincing performance with a top speed of 245 km/h at 160 kW (218 hp) and an acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds. And all this at a fuel consumption level of just 8.5 l/100 km.

High-performance through precision. The four-cylinder engine in the BMW 1 Series Coupé 120i produces a powerful torque even at low revs and allows a sports driving style in every range of revs. And all of this with commendable smoothness and efficient fuel consumption figures.

On average you blink about ten times a minute. In this time you miss 2,000 separate fuel injections supplying as little as 2 mg of fuel each time. This exceptional level of precisions is made possible by the piezo injectors, located centrally between the valves. The engine in the BMW 120i is therefore able to operate in lean-burn mode for far longer and at far higher revs. At the same time the compression and hence efficiency of the engine has been increased. Rapid power build-up, sporting driving dynamics, low consumption. The four-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW 1 Series Coupé combine high cost-effectiveness with excellent performance.

With its BMW 123d, BMW is presents the world’s first four-cylinder diesel engine featuring variable twin turbo. The two turbochargers of different sizes produce maximum pressure at all revs. The result is an especially spontaneous response at low revs and a powerful torque. Diesel engines with a third-generation common-rail injection system also offer an unattainable ratio between power and fuel consumption. For example, the BMW 123d thus boasts an impressive 150 kW/204 hp with a fuel consumption of 5.1 l/100 km. The fully aluminium engine block also reduces the weight by a tremendous 20 kg, compared with the car’s predecessor. Even more economical are the engines in the BMW 118d and 120d with outstanding consumption figures of only 4.5 and 4.7 l/100 km. And every bit as convincing as consumption and performance are the emission figures. All diesel engines in the BMW 1 Series Coupé fulfil the EU5 standard.

Overview
Inspired by the iconic BMW 2002 of yore, the BMW 1 Series made what was once quirky and styled it into a modern day performance coupe. The smallest vehicle BMW offers in the U.S., the 1 Series gives you everything the 3 Series does, but in a smaller, tidier package.

The sporty, nimble 1 Series is a perfect getaway vehicle for two. There is a back seat, but it is best suited to storage room and not passengers -- especially for a long haul. When the seatback of the front seat almost touches the seat cushion of the rear, you know room is limited.

Unlike most of its BMW kin, the 1 Series remains a simple vehicle with few variants and only two engine options, both of which are 3.0-liter inline sixes, one fitted with a turbo. For 2011, 1 Series buyers now have the option of one more transmission option -- BMW's coveted seven-speed DCT dual-clutch automated manual. There is only one thing we are still waiting for BMW to give us with the 1 Series -- an M version -- which is in the offing.

What's New
There are two big changes in the 1 Series for 2011. BMW has dropped the dual turbocharger; in its place is a single twin-scroll unit. Engine power remains the same at 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, but it now reaches peak torque at 1200 rpm. Second is the addition of BMW's coveted 7-speed DCT transmission which is available for the first time in the 135i.

Exterior
The 1 Series styling features short overhangs in addition to a squared-off nose and rear end. While some laud it an interesting modern day interpretation of a classic BMW design, others find it frumpy.

Interior
The 1 Series is available with a choice of two upholstery options -- leatherette or rich Boston Leather. A 60/40 split rear seat is standard. The optional Sport Package includes sports bucket seats with enhanced side support.
Performance & Handling
For the first time since its introduction, the 1 Series gets BMW's dual-clutch automated 7-speed DCT transmission. Based off the 3 Series, only shorter, the 1 Series has almost go-cart handling characteristics without the teeth-rattling ride. Having equal power, lighter weight and costing a few dollars less than said 3 Series makes for a serious performance machine.
Safety
Driver and passenger front airbags are standard, along with side impact thorax bags and front and rear head curtain bags. OnStar Automatic Crash Response is also standard. Dynamic safety devices include standard traction control and stability control.

Basic Warranty:

BMW 1 Series Concept – Renderings

This concept is pure fictional and based on nothing but imagination. I’m a huge fan of the One Series and I am under no illusions that I can create a better design. Having said that, I’m also not bound by any marketing and technical constraints, so the car pictured here would not and cannot predict the future model.

I’m doing this for fun and fun alone. My thinking towards the next model is that it might look more aggressive and purposeful. The design language will also reflect BMWs current design trends and will therefor be more edgy.

With my design, I tried to create a whole new identity for the One, but at the same time stuck to some typical BMW features.

Some interesting design elements: The headlights are CS Concept inspired but that’s where it ends. There are two parallel lines running from the kidney grill at the front all the way over the roof and ends in the rear hatch number plate indent. Also the two lines running along the side of the car carries on into the front bumper and bends downwards to integrate with the front air intake.

I hope you enjoy this Concept 1-Series as much as I enjoyed creating it.”
